How to Create Rolling Credits in Adobe Premiere Pro: Step-by-Step Tutorial

Rolling credits are an essential feature in video editing, whether you’re creating professional film credits or just adding a polished touch to your projects. In this quick tutorial, Premiere Gal guides us through the process of creating rolling credits in Adobe Premiere Pro, step by step.

Here are Premiere Gal’s excellent instructions in text format.

Step 1: Open the Essential Graphics Panel

  1. Open Adobe Premiere Pro and navigate to the Essential Graphics Panel.
(If it’s not visible, go to Window > Essential Graphics to enable it.)
  2. Switch to the Edit Tab within the Essential Graphics Panel.

Step 2: Create Your Text Layer

  1. Select New Layer and choose Text.
  2. Begin typing your credits, for example:
    • Produced by: Your Name
    • Directed by: Another Name
  3. To format your text:
    • Highlight all text by pressing Command + A (Mac) or Control + A (PC).
    • Use the Align and Transform Tools to center your text horizontally and vertically.

Step 3: Build Your Credit List

  1. Continue adding all necessary roles and names for your credits.
  2. For convenience, create a template that you can reuse in future projects.

Step 4: Enable Rolling Credits

  1. After typing out all credits:
    • In the Essential Graphics Panel, scroll down to the Responsive Design section.
    • Check the Roll option.
  2. Play your timeline to preview the rolling credits. They will start off-screen and roll onto the screen by default.

Step 5: Adjust Roll Settings

  • Start and End Off-Screen: Ensure your credits roll fully onto and off the screen for a smooth appearance.
  • Pre-Roll and Post-Roll Handles:
    • Add a pre-roll (e.g., 3 seconds) to delay the start of the roll.
    • Add a post-roll to pause on a black screen after the credits finish.
  • Ease In and Ease Out:
    • Adjust these to create a smooth acceleration at the beginning and deceleration at the end of the roll.
    • Example: Set the ease in/out duration to 3–5 seconds for a more professional touch.

Step 6: Control Roll Speed

  • The speed of the rolling credits depends on the length of the text layer in the timeline:
    • Shorter layers = Faster roll.
    • Longer layers = Slower roll.
Adjust the layer length to achieve your desired speed.

Step 7: Save as a Motion Graphics Template

  1. Once satisfied with your rolling credits, right-click (or control-click) on the text layer.
  2. Choose Export as Motion Graphics Template.
  3. Save it to your local templates folder for future projects.

By following these steps, you can effortlessly create and customize rolling credits in Adobe Premiere Pro. Perfect for your next cinematic production – happy editing!

Looking for an even better way?

Premier Pro’s auto-rolling credits are perfect when you’re already working with the software but setting up a long list of credits this way can be very time-consuming. An alternative is to create your credits list in Illustrator and import into After Effects.

Use After Effects and Illustrator to easily create rolling credits

With a short expression on the Position property crawlspeed = 2; value-[0,crawlspeed*timeToFrames(time)] you can have smooth, auto-rolling credits with the ease of being able to edit the text as an Illustrator file! This means you can have better control of the text layout design, and you’ll also be able to include graphics and logos!
